Almirante Marcial Sánchez-Barcáiztegui

The Real Club Náutico de Valencia set up the Trofeo Marcial Sánchez-Barcaiztegui, so that Valencia would be able to host its own relevant Regatta with the Cruiser Class and at the same time pay homage to the Armada by naming it with the same name as such a distinguished mariner.
His Majesty the King accepted being named the President of Honour of the Trophy in 1989 and obtained recognition by the Real Federación Española de Vela as a Regata de Alto Nivel.

Ever since the setting up of this Trophy, it has been held on several dates conditioned by the Calendario Nacional de Regatas (National Regatta Calendar). At first it was held during the second fortnight of March. In 1990 it was moved to July due to the Gulf War.

In 1991 the Trophy was held in September and from 1992 the dates have been fixed for the beginning of July when the Trofeo Marcial Sánchez-Barcaiztegui is now held every year as a prelude to the Copa del Rey in Palma de Mallorca. In 1997, due to an unfortunate accident in the Union Naval de Levante Shipyards the day before it was due to begin, the Regatta was postponed until December of the same year in solidarity with the families of the victims.

In 1999, and with the approval of Her Majesty Queen Sofia, the regatta was officially renamed and became "TROFEO DE S.M. LA REINA - REGATA HOMENAJE A LA ARMADA - COPA ALMIRANTE SÁNCHEZ-BARCAIZTEGUI", thereby join such as prestigious cup to the name of our Queen. Ever since then, the Real Club Náutico de Valencia has had the honour of being able to count on the attendance of the Queen together with His Majesty the King Juan Carlos, Prince Felipe and Princess Cristina, always accompanied by her husband, both for the prize-giving and throughout the days the regatta lasts.

In the 22 years of competition, the number of competitors from all over Spain has risen progressively, with the record number of 158 yachts taking part in three different regatta classes meaning that this Trophy has become one of the most important events of the National Calendar.

The best yachts in Spain have sailed in the waters of the Real Club Náutico de Valencia, particularly noteworthy being those of His Majesty the King, His Royal Highness the Prince Felipe and Her Royal Highness Princess Cristina.
